A Surprising 2026 Development

There is another interesting development that may be especially important to anyone wondering whether Mad Hatter Sanibel could someday return to its original location.

In 2026, the City of Sanibel specifically identified:

"The Mad Hatter Restaurant – 6467 Sanibel Captiva Road"

in city planning documents concerning properties with legal nonconforming uses affected by Hurricane Ian.

Why does that matter?

According to the city, The Mad Hatter represented a commercial use outside a traditional commercial district and was located within the Gulf Beach preservation district.

Following Hurricane Ian, Sanibel established deadlines affecting the ability to re-establish certain legal nonconforming uses and structures.

City staff proposed extending the applicable deadline from December 15, 2025, until December 15, 2026.

Importantly, this does NOT mean The Mad Hatter has announced that it is rebuilding.

However, it does show that as recently as 2026, the former Mad Hatter property was still specifically identified by the City of Sanibel when considering rules governing the ability to re-establish certain uses lost following Hurricane Ian.

For Mad Hatter fans hoping for a return someday, that's certainly an interesting development to watch.

Is Mad Hatter Sanibel Open in 2026?

No. The original Mad Hatter Restaurant is not currently open.

We also have not found an official announcement confirming a new Mad Hatter location, construction start date or reopening date.

That's important because older restaurant listings and travel websites can sometimes make it appear that The Mad Hatter is still operating.

It isn't.

The restaurant's own official website continues to carry its post-Hurricane Ian message and says:

"As we look to open up again — and we will..."

For now, however, there is no announced reopening date.

The Owners of Mad Hatter Are Still Serving Sanibel

While The Mad Hatter itself hasn't returned, its owners Max and Bridget Kolshak haven't disappeared from Sanibel's restaurant scene.

They partnered with Brian and Elke Podlasek, owners of another famous Sanibel restaurant, The Island Cow.

The partnership has an extraordinary backstory.

The Island Cow was destroyed by fire shortly before Hurricane Ian. Then Ian destroyed The Mad Hatter.

Rather than leave the island restaurant scene behind, the two families joined forces.

The result was Wickies Lighthouse Restaurant and The Magic Bus Ice Cream & Caffeine, both located at 362 Periwinkle Way on Sanibel's East End.

Mad Hatter Fans Should Know About Wickies

If you loved Mad Hatter Restaurant Sanibel, Wickies Lighthouse Restaurant is particularly worth knowing about.

Wickies combines influences from both The Island Cow and The Mad Hatter.

The concept brings together some of the casual, beachy personality associated with The Island Cow with culinary influences from the more upscale Mad Hatter.

That doesn't mean Wickies is simply The Mad Hatter under a new name.

It isn't.

It's a new restaurant with its own identity.

But Mad Hatter fans may recognize pieces of the restaurant they remember — including familiar culinary influences and even connections to some of its signature dishes.

The beloved Hatter Cheesecake, for example, has made its way onto the Wickies menu.

For longtime Mad Hatter customers, Wickies currently offers one of the strongest connections to the restaurant they remember.
